Melanie Coffee is an award-winning journalist who was an editor and reporter at The Associated Press for more than 12 years. As a freelance writer, her work has appeared in numerous publications including Take Part, The Huffington Post, Crain’s Chicago Business, and Kellogg Magazine.

She is also the founder of She’sWrite, a parenting and lifestyle blog that touches on issues of race. Her innovative blog has garnered many awards, including the Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Award and BlogHer’s Voices of the Year winner and presenter.

During her time at the AP, she worked in St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago, covering social issues, education, business and politics. While in Chicago, she also assigned and edited enterprise stories for 14 states.

She also was the web editor for The Chicago Reporter, an investigative magazine, where she oversaw bloggers’ and reporters’ online stories, slideshows and videos. Coffee also coordinated the magazine’s social media strategy through various platforms.

She has led several editing, writing, media-pitching, social media and diversity workshops and been a guest lecturer on college campuses.
